B. 1949 - Rodney Graham is a conceptual artist who explores various modes of perception, especially themes of location and dislocation. For instance he has arranged large-scale photographs upside down or created a video installaton of bicycles in a Berlin park on an unrelenting repetitive loop, set to rock music. He deliberately has avoided learning traditional art techniques or much art history because he seeks new interpretations of his world. One of the reasons he is attracted to Conceptual Art is that he, who initially wanted to be a writer, can incorporate his interest in literature with his art. He also uses sound such as abstract background noises, perhaps a movie projector, or Pop Music. Reoccuring themes are the quickly-passing pleasures of musical performances. A question that seems ever present in his work is: "Am I a musician trapped in an artist's mond or an artist trapped in a musician's body?" (Gordon)
