NICOLINO CALYO Биография

1799-1884. Calyo's classical style consisted of clear color and fine detail in the Italian "Veduta," or "view," tradition. His large-scale landscapes and marine paintings, which measured 5' x 4', depicted views of Baltimore from Federal Hill, Locust Point and Fairmount Park. Architectural monuments for which Baltimore was famous are visible in Calyo's paintings, including Gist's Shot Tower, St. Paul's Church, the Roman Catholic Cathedral, the Washington Monument, the first Presbyterian Church, and the Merchants Exchange. In his depiction of Federal Hill in the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art, curator Sona Johnston has noted that the Alexander Brown and Sons merchant flag was hanging atop the Observatory on the Hill, indicating that one of the company's ships was about to enter the port.
